FILM GROUP
We meet in the evenings, to watch and talk about films. These are chosen from members' suggestions and come mainly from our collections on video and DVD; they are shown on screen, using an electronic projector.
Plans for 2009 are for the usual varied programme, from all periods. These include a showing of The Blue Angel (with Marlene Dietrich), Nicolas Roeg's tense psychic thriller 'Don't Look Now' (based on a Daphne du Maurier novel), and the silent Eisenstein classic 'Battleship Potemkin'. We are also planning to show all three films in the complex and original 'Three Colours' series directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski.
On the lighter side, we are planning 'Bringing up Baby' with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, and, for December, 'Holiday Inn' with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, the film in which 'White Christmas' first appeared.
Other plans include 'Jezebel', with Bette Davis, 'On the Waterfront' with Marlon Brando, directed by Elia Kazan, and 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', a speculative telling of the story behind the Vermeer painting.
We may also visit South Hill Park Arts Centre cinema in January, depending on their programme.
We expect to continue in future years with the same mix of enjoyable and interesting films. New members are welcome to contribute their suggestions.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month, in the Methodist Church Hall in Rose Street, and members pay £1.50 per session. We average about 20-25 members per showing.
