Genealogy and Family History

We now have three groups addressing Genealogy and Family History. Two of these are short courses for helping people get started with their research. The third is the ongoing Genealogy Group aimed at helping members who have already begun researching their family history.

Starting Family History

A beginners course of three sessions is run periodically by Tony Weston. It aims to help anyone who wants to start tracing their family history but hasn't a clue where or how to start. It assumes no previous knowledge or experience and doesn't require your to own or use a computer.

The intention is to provide practical hands on assistance and to guide people through each step of the process of tracing their ancestry.

Please contact Tony Weston if interested in attending.

Computers and Family History

This course of 5 sessions runs periodically and aims to help those with no, or very little computer experience, to use the Internet to assist their family history research. If you are attending the 'Starting Family History' or have undertaken family history research before the Internet Era then this group may be for you.

We are fortunate in being able to run this course at the Emmbrook School where there is a collection of modern personal computers available to us.

Please contact Paul King if interested in attending.

Genealogy Group

The aim of the group is to help members with their hobby of researching their family history. We have a wide experience within the group and sharing of this experience is both a rewarding and enjoyable aspect of the group.

At our meetings we have talks on a variety of genealogical topics. These typically include sources of information, record keeping, personal experiences, and use of the Internet to aid genealogical research. We also usually have a discussion time which might share particular successes or suggest approaches to solving difficulties. Occasional visits are made to places such as the Berkshire Record Office, Mormon Family History Centre, Newspaper library in North London, and the National Archives at Kew. These visits often open up a new avenue of research for our members.

We have a membership of about twenty and meet on the 4th Wednesday of the month. We are fortunate in being able to meet at the Emmbrook School where there is a collection of modern personal computers available to us . The group has built up a useful library of books and guides to help members with their research.
