GREEK STUDIES
Greek Studies is a small, good-humoured group which meets monthly, on the first Tuesday to discuss aspects of ancient Greek culture of interest to members and easily accessible via the internet and libraries.
The group is led by Harry Strongman who has taught Greek and Roman History at Reading University and elsewhere, though researching the various topics is shared by everyone.
In recent months we have studies slavery, drama, the role of women in Greek society, the ancient Olympics and Minoan architecture.
We have also visited the Ure museum at Reading University where we were allowed to handle some ancient pottery under the supervision of Dr Amy Smith.
We aim for an equally varied programme over the next 12 months, and although we have reached capacity with ten current members, we may have vacancies at a later date.
