LATIN

After five years learning the language to about GCSE level (which was more fun than it may sound) we have moved into a new mode: reading original Latin texts with the hope of better appreciating the language and its literature, Roman history and culture, as well as improving our skill in reading Latin. We started in September 2006 with Caesar's invasions of Britain (where else could we start?), using the Oxford Latin Reader by Maurice Balme and James Morwood. This contains selections of six authors of the Latin Golden Age: three prose writers (Cicero, Caesar and Livy), three poets (Catullus, Virgil and Ovid).

We have eight members, but are not a closed group. It may not be easy for those who learned Latin some time ago to start again at this level, but we would welcome potential members who want to give it a trial. We would also be happy to give guidance for members wishing to revise Latin or to learn it from scratch.
