Books B started in 1998 and over the years members have read books by a wide variety of authors. Each October we start to recommend the books we would like to read the following year and a list is (democratically) compiled by the year end. These are mostly modern novels, with the occasional classic and biography. Members take turns to introduce the book of the month, telling us a bit about the author and any interesting reviews they have come across. It is very rare that every member likes the book so we have some spirited discussions. We are a “mixed” group and hearing the views of others (both male and female) is illuminating and adds to our enjoyment. We each get the opportunity to give our opinion, though others are allowed to “chip in” to add their own comments!
Our meetings are hosted by group members and, after discussing the book, we have refreshments and a social chat. In December, rather than a specific book, we generally have a “what I have been reading in the past year” session, which often introduces us to new authors.
The group currently has space for a couple more people, so please contact the convenor if you would like to come along to a meeting.
