Group Description

The Military History Group was first formed in 1997 and has been continually in operation since then. For its first 17 years, the Group was under the able stewardship of Don Macdonald as Convenor, but following his ‘retirement’ the Group now has tripartite leadership of Ian Grainge (Convenor), John Mann (Membership) and Chris Readings (Finance).

The Group meets at 2.30pm on the third Thursday of each month in the upstairs room at Woosehill Community Centre. It has at present around 40 registered members, which approximately equates to the permitted number in the Meeting Room.

Our speakers are usually Group members, speaking on any topic of their choice, although on rare occasions, guest speakers may be invited. Discussion of the speaker’s chosen topic is encouraged and always lively.

For the July and/or August meetings we try to arrange an outside visit, and in recent years we have visited, amongst others, Bletchley Park, the D-Day Museum at Smethwick, the Royal Logistics Corps Museum at Deepcut and this year it is hoped to visit the Royal Greenjackets Museum in Winchester.

Topics range through the entire spectrum of world military history, from Ancient Greek Admirals, American Civil War battles, Ottoman sieges, the Wars of the Roses, through to the history of Portsmouth, the occupation of the Netherlands and the activities of ENSA and the songs of WWI & II. No historical or military stone is safe from being unturned!

The group has space available and would welcome new members.

Details of our 2018 – 2020 program can be found here.
