Monthly Meeting: The Duke of Wellington and his House – Brigadier Michael Aris and Richard Bennett

Date and time: 18th December 2018 from 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm

Cost: £3.00

When our speaker for the December meeting pulled out of his agreement, we were fortunate to get two eminent speakers to fill the gap.

Brigadier Aris CBE DL has had a very full life not only in the army but in various paid and voluntary roles in his retirement, from Working for the Princes Trust to his present role as tour guide at The Duke of Wellington’s country house at Stratfield Saye. He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the royal County of Berkshire in 2005

Richard Bennett has likewise led a very full life through his working life and even more so in retirement.  He also was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire in January of this year, and is currently also a guide at Stratfield Saye.

Their illustrated talk will include a brief history of the house and may mention some of the Great Duke’s campaigns, but will concentrate on his life after Waterloo and the development of Stratfield Saye House.

Quote from their Notes to us,

“It is a House where the presence of the Great Duke is felt to this day.”
