What could be more topical than a talk on America? Britain has long had a ‘special relationship’ with this vast country based on migration, a common language, evangelical Protestantism, liberal traditions, trade, and in the 20th century in defence of our shared values. Seen for centuries by many as the land of opportunity, of democracy, and individual liberty, America now seems to be at a crossroad. Whether we have close ties with America or not, we are all influenced by events in the United States.
Mark Lovett’s illustrated talk will explore both the Culture and Politics of the USA. It will concentrate on the formation of the Federal Republic, the contradictory nature of its evolution and the current political reality.
Mark has been a Magistrate for 20 years and is a past Chair of the East Berkshire and subsequent Berkshire Bench. Prior to that he was Head of History and Politics at Wellington College. He has been a member of Wokingham U3A since 2007.
