Evening Meeting: St James’ Palace and Surroundings Areas – Val Pretlove

Date and time: 14th June 2016 from 7:00 pm until 9:30 pm

Cost: £2.00

ST James palaceFrom the site of a hospital for lepers to a home for royalty, St James’s Palace gives it name to an area which became, and still is, one of the most expensive and exclusive in the world. We still refer to the Queen’s Court as the Court of St James’s (to which all Ambassadors and High Commissioners are accredited) because the palace is the most senior royal residence in London, despite the fact that since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 all British monarchs have lived across the park in Buckingham Palace.

The neighbouring Grand Houses such as Clarence, Carlton, Marlborough and Lancaster are, or were once, the homes of royal family members or the wealthiest of the aristocracy. (A house on Carlton House Terrace is reported to have been on the market in 2013 for £250 million!)  It is the area of gentlemen’s clubs, exclusive shops and private art galleries. But it wasn’t always like this.

Val Pretlove will disclose the fascinating history of the buildings and their occupants, the development of St James’s Park, and give us an ‘armchair guided tour’ of the area.

NB. Numbers at St Paul’s Parish Rooms, Wokingham are limited by fire regulations and unfortunately there can be no admittance once the hall is full.
