Monthly Meeting: Dickens at Christmas – Colin Oakes

Date and time: December 17 from 2:30 pm until 4:00 pm

Cost: £3.00

Charles Dickens wrote about Christmas his whole professional life from 1832 to 1869. This talk will examine the many works that Dickens wrote around, and indeed about, Christmas.

Colin says: “We will look first at Sketches by Boz for his first attempts. We will then move onto the Christmas episode in Pickwick Papers at Dingley Dell, then onto the very curious chapter in Nicholas Nickleby followed by Master Humphrey’s Clock. The main part of the talk will be on the Christmas books including Christmas Carol. Then the major opus for Dickens and Christmas which is of course the Christmas stories from Household World and All the Year Round. This will include the last of his seasonal stories, A Tale of Two Lazy Apprentices. If we have time we look at how Dickens celebrated this time of year with his family”.

Colin is an archaeologist by training but since 1982, has undertaken walking tours, lectures and coach tours all over London. He gives 296 different talks including many on literary subjects.
